Phrae lies in a broad valley in northern Thailand, with the Yom River flowing past the town. The most distinctive feature on the map is the old town: an oval shape once enclosed by walls and a moat, and still clearly traced in today's streets. Inside it, lanes and temple grounds form a denser, older pattern.
The town is known for its teak houses, a legacy of the timber trade that brought wealth here in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Wat Phra That Cho Hae, a revered hilltop temple, lies just outside town. Traditional indigo-dyed cotton clothing, the mo hom, is also closely associated with Phrae.
