Pinotepa Nacional, officially Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, is the main commercial center of the Costa Chica, the coastal strip of southwestern Oaxaca. Federal Highway 200 runs through the town on its way along the Pacific coast. On the map, the town's streets gather around that road and then loosen into outlying neighborhoods.
The region is known for its mix of cultures. Mixtec communities, Afro-Mexican towns and mestizo families all meet in Pinotepa's markets, and the town is a gathering point for crafts, food and festivals from the surrounding villages. Textiles woven in nearby Mixtec communities are among the area's best-known traditions.
The town sits on gently rolling ground between the Sierra Madre del Sur and the ocean, with streams and farmland around its edges.
