Pirot lies in south-eastern Serbia, in a valley of the Nišava River close to the Bulgarian border. The river flows through the middle of the town and splits it into two banks joined by several bridges. Streets run close along the water, and the land rises to the north toward the Stara Planina mountains.
The town is known across the Balkans for Pirot kilims, flat-woven carpets with geometric patterns that are recognised as a traditional craft. It is also known for its cheese. On the riverbank stands Pirot fortress, known locally as Kale, a medieval stronghold whose walls and towers overlook the old part of town.
A Pirot map poster shows the river as the main axis. Bridges cross it at intervals, the fortress sits on its bank, and the neighbourhoods spread out on either side. The main road and railway run through the valley toward Niš and Sofia. The composition is balanced and clear, much like the geometric kilims the town is famous for.
