Playas, officially General Villamil, is on the Pacific coast of Guayas Province in Ecuador. The ocean defines its map. A long, nearly straight beach runs along one edge, and the town's grid of streets sits behind it. Beyond the town lies the dry coastal plain that stretches inland toward Guayaquil.
It is the closest open-ocean beach to Guayaquil, and for decades city residents have come here on weekends and holidays. The town is also known for its fishermen, some of whom still use traditional balsa rafts along the shore. The street layout is mostly regular, with blocks running at right angles to the sea.
