Plettenberg Bay lies on South Africa's Garden Route, in the Western Cape, facing a broad crescent of the Indian Ocean. The town sits on high ground above the sea, with its streets stepping down toward the beaches. To the south the Robberg peninsula juts far out into the water, while to the north-east the Keurbooms and Bitou rivers meet in a wide lagoon behind the dunes.
Early Portuguese navigators called the bay Bahia Formosa, the beautiful bay, and it later took the name of the Dutch colonial governor Joachim van Plettenberg. Today the Robberg Nature Reserve protects the peninsula, and the bay is known for sightings of dolphins, seals and whales. The Beacon Isle hotel, built on a rocky point between two beaches, is a local landmark.
