Polotsk stands on the Western Dvina in the Vitebsk Region of northern Belarus and is usually described as the oldest city in the country. Chronicles first mention it in 862. On a map the broad river cuts through the town in a steady curve, and the small Polota river joins it near the historic centre, where the town began.
St Sophia Cathedral rises above the Dvina on the site of the old castle hill. The city is also tied to Euphrosyne of Polotsk, whose convent lies on its western side, and to Francysk Skaryna, the sixteenth-century printer born here. A monument in the centre marks one of the places claimed as the geographical centre of Europe.
