Polūr is a town in Tiruvannamalai district, in northern Tamil Nadu. It sits on the plains east of the Javadhu Hills, whose forested slopes rise a short distance to the west. The town serves the surrounding villages as a local market centre, and it lies on the road and rail routes that link Vellore and Katpadi with Tiruvannamalai and the country further south.
From above, Polūr has a dense older core of narrow streets and closely packed buildings. Main roads leave it in several directions. The railway line cuts across the town on its own straight course, and on the edges the built-up area opens into irrigated fields and the tanks, or reservoirs, typical of the Tamil countryside.
