Polyarnyy lies on the western shore of the Kola Bay, the long fjord that runs from the Barents Sea down to Murmansk. The coast here is rocky and cut into coves, and the town fits into one of the most sheltered of them. From above, the streets curve around the water's edge and climb onto the rocky ground behind. Beyond them lies open tundra-like terrain dotted with small lakes.
The town was founded at the end of the nineteenth century as Aleksandrovsk, a port on the Murman coast, and was renamed Polyarnyy in the 1930s. It became one of the first bases of the Soviet Northern Fleet and remains a closed naval town. It lies well north of the Arctic Circle and has weeks of polar night each winter.

The town wraps around a deep inlet protected from the open sea. This natural harbour is the reason a port was founded here, and it sits at the centre of the composition.
