Poptún lies in the south-central part of Petén, Guatemala's large northern department. It sits on an unusual patch of open savanna surrounded by forested hills. The main highway running north towards Flores passes through the town, and its streets form a fairly regular grid spreading out from the road across the level ground.
East of the town, the land rises towards the Maya Mountains, which stretch across the border into Belize. The municipality around Poptún includes Naj Tunich, a cave known for its ancient Maya paintings and inscriptions. It's one of the notable archaeological sites of the region, though it lies outside the town itself.
