Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, lies on the southern coast of the island of New Guinea, facing the Gulf of Papua and the Coral Sea. The city has no single centre. Its districts are scattered across a landscape of dry hills and valleys, linked by winding roads that follow the terrain between the bays.
The older town sits on the Paga Point peninsula beside Fairfax Harbour, where the port is located. Nearby, the village of Hanuabada extends over the water on wooden stilts. It is one of the oldest settlements in the area and home to the Motu people. On the other side of the peninsula, Ela Beach curves along the shore south of downtown.
Inland, the government district of Waigani holds Parliament House and many ministries, set among wide roads in a more open layout.
