Santa Isabel is one of the largest islands in the Solomon Islands and the core of Isabel Province. It runs for around 200 kilometres from northwest to southeast and is narrow for its length, with a spine of forested mountains down its centre. Bays, offshore islets and reefs break up the coastline, especially toward the northwest end.
The Spanish navigator Álvaro de Mendaña named the island. His expedition landed here in 1568, the first recorded European visit to the Solomons. Today most people live in coastal villages, and the provincial capital, Buala, is a small town on the east coast. Much of the interior is still forested, and few roads cross the mountains.
