Malaita is the most populous island of the Solomon Islands, a long, rugged landmass northeast of Guadalcanal. Its provincial capital, Auki, sits on the northwest coast. At the southern end, the Maramasike Passage almost cuts the island in two. This narrow channel separates the main island from the smaller southern part, known as Small Malaita or Maramasike.
The interior is steep and forested, with few roads, so most of the linework on a Malaita map poster follows the coast. Roads run from Auki along parts of the northern and western shores. The rest of the island is defined by its winding coastline, its river mouths and the reefs that sit just offshore.
Two lagoons give the island its most distinctive shapes. In the Lau Lagoon on the northeast coast, people built artificial islands by hand from coral stones. The Langa Langa Lagoon on the west coast is known for making shell money, strings of shell discs still used in customary exchange. On the map, both show as fine clusters of islets along the shore.
