Propriá stands on the right bank of the São Francisco River in northern Sergipe, facing the state of Alagoas across the water. The river defines any map of the town. It sweeps past the urban edge as a wide band with islands and sandbars in its channel, and the older streets run parallel to its bank.
The BR-101 bridge across the São Francisco links Propriá with Porto Real do Colégio on the opposite shore. It has made the town a crossing point on one of Brazil's main north–south routes. On paper the bridge is a single firm line spanning the river, drawing the eye from the Sergipe side to the Alagoas side.
A Propriá map poster works because of this balance between water and street. The riverbank gives the town a strong natural edge, the older blocks near the water carry most of the detail, and newer districts spread inland over low hills.
