Przemyśl lies on the San river in southeastern Poland, close to the Ukrainian border. The old town climbs a slope on the river's southern bank, its streets bending around the hill toward the castle and cathedral. Across the water, newer districts spread over flatter ground, joined to the centre by several bridges.
Around the city, a much larger pattern is visible. In the nineteenth century Austria-Hungary built Przemyśl Fortress, a ring of forts and defensive works encircling the town. During the First World War it endured a long siege, one of the largest of that war, before falling in 1915. Traces of the forts still appear in the surrounding hills.
