Pushkin, known historically as Tsarskoye Selo, lies about 25 kilometres south of central St Petersburg. From above, the town is split between two clear forms: a regular grid of streets to the east and the large landscaped grounds of the Catherine and Alexander parks to the west. Ponds, canals and long avenues make the parks as legible on a map as the town itself.
This was the summer residence of the Russian imperial family. The Catherine Palace, home to the reconstructed Amber Room, and the Alexander Palace stand inside the parks. The poet Alexander Pushkin studied at the Lyceum next to the palace, and the town was renamed in his honour in 1937. Russia's first public railway, opened in 1837, ran from here to St Petersburg.
