Putignano is a town in Apulia, set on the Murgia uplands in the hinterland of Bari. Its old centre is one of its most distinctive map features: a compact, almost circular core of narrow lanes, enclosed by a street that follows the line of the former walls. Around it, the modern town spreads out in a looser and more regular pattern.
Beyond the town, the countryside of this part of Apulia is marked by dry-stone walls, olive groves, farmhouses and scattered trulli, the conical-roofed buildings associated with the nearby Itria Valley. On a map, this produces a finely divided landscape of plots and lanes, a pattern very different from the tight concentric streets of the centre.
Putignano is best known for its carnival, which dates back to 1394 and is considered one of the oldest in Europe, with large papier-mâché floats parading through the streets.
