Ramla stands on the coastal plain between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, next to its older neighbour Lod. On the map it looks like a layered place. A small historic core of irregular lanes surrounds the market, and later neighbourhoods on more regular blocks surround that. Railway tracks and major roads cut across the landscape, and the airport lies a short distance to the north.
The Umayyad caliph Sulayman ibn Abd al-Malik founded the town in the early eighth century, and for a long period it was the administrative capital of the region. Its best-known structures include the White Tower, a tall medieval minaret, and the Pool of the Arches, an underground cistern from the late eighth century.
