Ratchaburi lies in western Thailand, roughly 100 kilometres south-west of Bangkok, on the banks of the Mae Klong River. It is the capital of a province of the same name, which stretches from the lowland plains near the Gulf of Thailand to the hills along the border with Myanmar.
The city centre sits on the riverbank. Near the market and the old town the streets form a grid, and newer districts spread outward along the highways. On the map the Mae Klong makes a clear, broad curve through the city, crossed by several bridges. Low limestone hills rise just to the west, known for their caves and temples.
Ratchaburi is famous across Thailand for its large glazed ceramic jars, often decorated with dragons, which have been made here for generations.
