Rawicz, in the south of Greater Poland near the border with Lower Silesia, is one of those towns whose plan reveals its origins at a glance. It was founded in the seventeenth century as a planned settlement, and the historic centre still follows a regular grid of streets around a large market square. From above, the blocks look almost ruled into place.
Around the old town, a band of green follows the line of former fortifications, then gives way to later housing estates and industrial areas. The railway passes the town on one side, and roads leave the centre in straight lines towards the neighbouring towns and villages. Beyond the edges, the flat farmland of the region stretches in long, narrow fields.
Rawicz is also known across Poland for its large prison, a long-standing institution in the town.
