Requena lies in the Loreto region of Peru, on the Ucayali River upstream from Iquitos. Water dominates the map. The broad, looping river runs beside the town, with oxbow lakes, side channels and seasonal islands around it, while the streets form a small, regular grid on the higher bank above the floodline.
Like many Amazonian towns, Requena depends on the river for transport. Riverboats connect it with Iquitos and other settlements, and its waterfront is the working edge of the place. Beyond the last streets, forest and wetlands take over, crossed only by a few paths and by the river's endless bends.
