Ressano Garcia sits on Mozambique's western border, facing Komatipoort in South Africa across the frontier. The town occupies a natural gateway where the Komati River cuts through the Lebombo Mountains, and on a map that geography is obvious: a narrow corridor of river, rail line and road threading between the hills, with the settlement spread along it.
This is the main crossing between the Maputo area and South Africa's Mpumalanga province, and the border post handles heavy traffic of trucks, buses and travellers on the road between Maputo and Johannesburg. The railway to the South African interior passes through as well, and its long curving line is one of the strongest features in the composition.
