Rieti stands on a low rise beside the Velino, at the southern edge of a broad, fertile plain in the Sabine country of northern Lazio. The historic centre keeps long stretches of its medieval walls, and the streets inside them are compact and slightly irregular, while newer districts spread across the flat land beyond.
The town has long called itself the geographic centre of Italy, the Umbilicus Italiae, and a marker in Piazza San Rufo recalls the claim. In Roman times it was an important Sabine city on the Via Salaria, and remains of the Roman bridge and a viaduct survive near the river crossing.
To the northeast rises Monte Terminillo, a ski mountain often called the mountain of Rome, and the valley around the city holds several sanctuaries linked to Saint Francis of Assisi. The river runs along the southern side of the centre, crossed at the point where the old Via Salaria entered the town, and continues across the plain in broad curves.

The basin beside the city, once a lake drained in Roman times, is now a flat patchwork of fields, drainage channels and small roads.
