Rillieux-la-Pape lies on the northern edge of the Lyon metropolitan area, on a plateau above the Rhône. A steep slope runs down to the river on the southern side of town. On the map it is a clear break between the built-up plateau and the valley below.
Much of Rillieux-la-Pape took shape in the 1960s and 1970s, when a large new town was planned here for a growing population. From above, that period shows as broad blocks, curving access roads and large green spaces between apartment buildings. This is quite unlike the tighter lanes of the older village centres nearby.
Below the plateau, the Rhône splits into channels, with islands and drinking-water fields along the banks.
