Romorantin-Lanthenay is the main town of the Sologne, the forest and lake country of the Loir-et-Cher. On a map the Sauldre River gives the town its shape. In the centre the river divides into several arms, creating small islands crossed by short bridges. The medieval streets bunch tightly around them, and newer districts spread outward across the flat land.
In the early sixteenth century, Francis I asked Leonardo da Vinci to design an ideal royal city and palace here. The plans, drawn up in Leonardo's last years, were never built. In the twentieth century the town became known for car making, including the Matra factory that built the Renault Espace.

The former village of Lanthenay, which gave the town the second half of its name, lies to the north. It adds a separate cluster of streets to a wider frame.
