Saintes was founded by the Romans as Mediolanum Santonum, at the end of a Roman road from Lyon, and the map still carries traces of that past. The Charente River curves through the town, dividing the old centre with its cathedral on the west bank from the quarter around the Abbaye aux Dames on the east. Bridges tie the two sides together at close intervals.
The Arch of Germanicus, built in the first century, once stood at the entrance of a Roman bridge and was moved to the east bank in the nineteenth century when the bridge was demolished. To the west, the amphitheatre sits in a natural hollow, its elliptical outline still visible among the surrounding streets and gardens.
Beyond the historic core, the town spreads over low hills and down to the river's floodplain, where open meadows follow the Charente.
