Salt lies immediately west of Girona, on the flat plain of the river Ter. The two places have grown into each other so completely that from above the boundary between them is hard to find. The streets form a dense, mostly regular network. The Ter runs along the northern side, and the river's wooded banks and meadows separate the town from the hills beyond.
For centuries water from the Ter was carried through the area by an irrigation channel. That channel powered mills and later the textile factories that turned Salt into an industrial town in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Many of those factory buildings have since been converted to other uses. Today Salt is known as one of the most diverse municipalities in Catalonia, with a large population of families from around the world.
A Salt map poster shows the town as part of a larger urban area. The riverbank forms one edge and the grid of streets fills the plain, while the old channel and main roads give it structure. It is a useful reminder that Girona's metropolitan area is larger than its famous old quarter.
