Saluzzo lies in the province of Cuneo, at the point where the Alpine foothills meet the plain of the Po. On the map it has two levels. The historic upper town climbs a hillside in narrow, steep, curving streets up to the Castiglia, the old castle of the marquises, while the lower town spreads across the flat ground with straighter, wider streets.
For several centuries, Saluzzo was the capital of an independent marquisate, and the upper town keeps its medieval layout of churches, palaces and stepped lanes. From above, the contrast between the tight spiral near the top and the open grid below is very clear. Monviso, the source of the Po, dominates the view to the west.
The writer and patriot Silvio Pellico was born in Saluzzo. A Saluzzo map poster shows a small capital that still reads, from above, as a fortified hill town with a newer city at its feet.
