Salvaleón de Higüey, usually called simply Higüey, is the capital of La Altagracia Province at the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic. The city sits inland, away from the resort beaches of the coast. Its streets spread across fairly flat ground in a loose grid that gets more irregular towards the edges, where newer neighbourhoods meet cane fields and pasture.
The city dates from the early Spanish colonial period, and it is best known as a place of pilgrimage. The Basilica of Our Lady of Altagracia is a modern concrete church with a tall, slender arch, completed in the early 1970s. Every January it draws visitors from across the country.
