Samannūd sits in Gharbia Governorate in the middle of the Nile Delta, on the western bank of the Damietta branch of the Nile. The river is the town's defining edge, a wide, smooth curve with the town lined up along it. Across the rest of the map, the delta's flat land is divided by canals and irrigation channels into a fine pattern of fields.
The town stands on the site of ancient Sebennytos, an important city in Pharaonic Egypt. It was the home of the Thirtieth Dynasty, the last native dynasty to rule Egypt, and of the priest Manetho, whose history of Egypt gave us the system of dynasties still used today. The modern town is dense. The streets are narrow and tightly packed in the older areas, especially near the river, and slightly more regular towards the outskirts.
