San Fernando stands on the Isla de León, and on a map it looks very much like an island. The Caño de Sancti Petri, a tidal channel, separates it from the mainland, and wide salt marshes cover most of the surrounding area. The old salt pans form a geometric mosaic of rectangles among winding channels.
The city centre runs along a long main street that crosses the island, with a regular pattern of streets on each side. The historic Puente Zuazo crosses the channel to the mainland, and a narrow strip of land leads north toward Cádiz. Naval installations and the Royal Navy Observatory stand on their own sites around the edges.
San Fernando has a notable place in Spanish history: in 1810 the Cortes of Cádiz first met here, in the building now known as the Real Teatro de las Cortes. The flamenco singer Camarón de la Isla was born here. A San Fernando map poster shows a city built between land, sea and salt.
