San Juan Bautista is a district on the southern side of Iquitos, in Peru's Loreto region deep in the Amazon basin. On a map, the urban grid of the city runs into the surrounding rainforest. Blocks become fewer and roads longer until only a few routes lead out into the forest.
Iquitos is often described as the largest city in the world that cannot be reached by road. It relies instead on river and air travel. The one major road leaving the city heads south through this area toward the town of Nauta, and it appears on the map as a single long line through the forest.
