Sandnes lies at the head of the Gandsfjord in Rogaland, on Norway's southwest coast, just south of Stavanger. From above, the town centre sits on flat land at the end of the fjord. The water reaches up from the north like a long, narrow finger, and neighbourhoods spread along both shores and up the surrounding slopes.
To the south and west, the land opens onto Jæren, one of Norway's flattest and most intensively farmed landscapes, crossed by straight roads and field boundaries. Sandnes grew as an industrial town known for pottery and later for bicycle manufacturing, which earned it the nickname of Norway's bicycle city.
