Sandomierz rises on a high bank above the Vistula in southeastern Poland, one of the country's oldest towns. On a map, the historic centre forms a compact oval on the hill, with the market square and town hall at its heart, the Gothic cathedral and castle at its southern end, and steep slopes falling to the river below.
The town is known for its well-preserved old quarter, the Opatów Gate and an underground route through medieval cellars beneath the square. Around it, deep loess ravines such as the Queen Jadwiga Gorge cut into the surrounding land, and many Poles also know the streets from the television series Father Matthew.
