Santa Bárbara is a city in Minas Gerais, Brazil, east of Belo Horizonte in the mineral-rich hill country known as the Iron Quadrangle. It grew up during the colonial gold-mining era, and its historic centre keeps churches and townhouses from that time. It is also the birthplace of Afonso Pena, president of Brazil in the early twentieth century.
The terrain is steep and folded, and the street plan follows it. Instead of a grid, the map shows roads that climb, curve and branch along valley floors and ridges, with the older centre forming a small, tight cluster. Newer neighbourhoods spread along the approach roads, and forested hills fill the gaps between them.
The Serra do Caraça rises nearby, home to the Caraça sanctuary and nature reserve, and it gives the region its character.
