Santiago sits in the western interior of Rio Grande do Sul, in the southernmost state of Brazil. From above, the town looks compact and orderly. Its streets run in a regular grid that thins at the edges, and beyond that the lines give way to open, rolling land. That land belongs to the wide southern countryside of pastures, farm tracks and scattered ranch buildings.
The town is known in the region as the Terra dos Poetas, the land of poets, a name that honours the writers who came from or wrote about it. On a map that literary reputation leaves no trace, of course. What you see is the plain geometry of a southern Brazilian service town, with blocks of similar size, a few wider avenues and roads leading out towards neighbouring municipalities.
