Santiago de Compostela is the end point of the Camino de Santiago, the network of pilgrimage routes across Europe that leads to the tomb traditionally held to be that of the apostle James. On the map, the old town is a tight, irregular oval of narrow streets, with the cathedral and its surrounding squares at the centre.
The old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is built largely of granite and stands on raised ground. Around it, the city spreads over hills and small river valleys, including those of the Sar and the Sarela. The tree-lined Alameda park forms a green terrace on the south-western edge of the historic centre.
