Sarov lies in the far south of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, on the border with Mordovia, surrounded by extensive forest. Its map is unusual. The city is a compact block of planned development set deep inside woodland, with the small Satis River and its tributaries winding past. Very few roads lead out of it, and the settlement's edges are sharp.
For much of the twentieth century Sarov had no public name. It was known by code names including Arzamas-16. It became the home of the Soviet Union's nuclear weapons research centre, where the country's first atomic bomb was designed. It remains a closed city with controlled access. That history shows in the orderly, purpose-built street layout, with its broad avenues and regular residential districts.
Long before that, Sarov was known for its monastery and for Saint Seraphim of Sarov, one of the most revered figures in Russian Orthodoxy. Today, the monastery and the laboratory town share the same small patch of cleared forest. The Satis River
The small river and its tributaries wind along the edge of town. They add soft curves and ponds against the city's straighter planned streets.
Planned Soviet districts
Broad avenues and regular residential blocks give much of Sarov a deliberate, ordered geometry. The layout clearly shows the city's origins as a purpose-built research town.
