Sava lies in the province of Taranto, on the low limestone plateau that runs towards the heel of Italy. The land around it is almost flat, so the town shows up on the map as a tight knot of streets set in wide open countryside. Country lanes leave it in every direction, cutting straight between fields and walled plots.
The centre is the densest part, with short and irregular streets typical of southern Italian towns, and newer quarters spread outwards in a looser, more regular pattern. Sava is also part of the Primitivo di Manduria wine area. The vineyards and olive groves that surround the town give the landscape its rural character, even if on a street map they appear as the calm blank space around the roads.
