Say lies on the Niger River in south-western Niger, downstream from the capital Niamey. From above, the river is the dominant feature, a broad channel with sandbanks and islands, and the town spreads along its bank in a pattern of streets and compounds that stops where the dry savanna begins.
Say has long been known as a religious and scholarly centre, and for centuries it was a crossing point and meeting place on the river. Further south, the land toward the borders with Benin and Burkina Faso includes the W National Park, one of the region's major protected areas.
