Schrobenhausen lies on the River Paar in Upper Bavaria, between Augsburg and Ingolstadt. Its historic centre is one of the more complete walled towns in the region, with long sections of the medieval town wall and its towers still standing. From above, this gives the old town a clear, enclosed outline, with newer neighbourhoods spreading out beyond it.
Inside the walls, the street pattern is dense and slightly irregular, gathered around the main square and the parish church. The Paar runs past the town in a gentle curve, with channels and green banks alongside. The surrounding land is flat to gently rolling and heavily farmed, above all for asparagus, which has made the area known throughout Germany.
The town is also the birthplace of the painter Franz von Lenbach, one of the best-known portraitists of nineteenth-century Munich, and a museum here is dedicated to him.
