Seferihisar sits on the Aegean coast southwest of İzmir. The town centre is set back slightly from the sea, while its coastal neighbourhoods run down to the water. The shoreline is where the map comes alive. There is the enclosed harbour and fortified old quarter of Sığacık, a series of small bays and headlands, and the long stretch of beach towards Ürkmez.
In 2009 Seferihisar became the first Turkish town to join Cittaslow, the international slow-city movement, and it is known for its local markets and unhurried pace. Just south of Sığacık are the ruins of Teos, an ancient Ionian city. Its remains lie in open countryside, where the modern road pattern gives way to olive groves and fields.
A Seferihisar map poster sets the tidy walled square of Sığacık against the irregular Aegean coast and the looser pattern of the inland town. In black and white, the sea becomes a calm, empty field. The site of the Ionian city of Teos lies on the peninsula south of Sığacık. On the map it shows up as a quiet area of paths and open ground near the shore.
