Sendai was founded in the early seventeenth century by the feudal lord Date Masamune, who built his castle on Aoba hill above the Hirose River. The river curves tightly around the western edge of the centre, cutting steep banks, and the downtown blocks east of it keep the rectangular grid laid out for the castle town. Main avenues run straight between the station and the river.
Sendai is known as the City of Trees, and its broad avenues lined with zelkova trees, such as Jozenji-dori, are a signature of the centre. On a Sendai map poster, the compact grid contrasts with the curving river and the forested hills to the west. To the east, a wide coastal plain runs towards the Pacific shore and the port.
Each August the city holds its Tanabata festival, when the shopping arcades are hung with elaborate paper streamers. Sendai is the largest city in the Tohoku region and a major stop on the Shinkansen line north from Tokyo. The map shows both sides of the place: a planned historic core and a modern regional capital spreading across valleys and hills.
