Aizu-Wakamatsu lies in the Aizu basin of western Fukushima, surrounded by mountains, with Mount Bandai and Lake Inawashiro to the northeast. From above, the city is laid out on the flat basin floor, with a regular grid of streets extending from the old castle grounds. The castle's moats and the park around them form a clear, square-shaped open area at the heart of the city.
Tsuruga Castle, rebuilt in the twentieth century, is the city's defining landmark. Aizu played a central role in the Boshin War of 1868, and the story of the Byakkotai, young samurai who died on Iimoriyama hill, is closely tied to the city's identity. Aizu is also known for sake brewing and lacquerware.
