Sesto San Giovanni borders Milan to the north-east and joins it so seamlessly that on a map it is hard to see where one ends and the other begins. What sets it apart is scale. For most of the twentieth century, huge factory sites belonging to Falck, Breda, Marelli and others covered much of the town, and their outlines still shape the plan.
The town was once one of Italy's largest industrial centres, and its strong labour movement earned it the nickname the Stalingrad of Italy. After the steelworks closed, large brownfield areas remained, some of which are being redeveloped. The Lambro River runs along the eastern side, and Milan's metro line M1 ends at Sesto FS station.
