Shingū lies on the coast just north of Fukuoka City, facing the Genkai Sea. From above, a long, gently curved shoreline lines its western edge, backed by a belt of coastal pine forest. Behind it, newer residential districts and older farming areas meet, and roads form a mix of planned grids and winding country lanes.
Offshore, the small island of Ainoshima belongs to the town. It is widely known for its many resident cats, which draw visitors on the ferry from Shingū's port. A Shingū map poster can be framed to include the island, a small shape floating in open water off the coast.
Inland, the land rises into low hills and rice fields crossed by small rivers heading for the sea. The railway runs parallel to the coast, with station neighbourhoods clustered along it. The result is a map of three bands: sea, settled coastal plain and green hills.
