Showţ lies in West Azerbaijan province, in the far northwestern corner of Iran, close to the borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan exclave. It is the administrative centre of Showţ County. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets on level ground, with fields pressing close on every side and roads leaving the centre toward nearby villages.
The surrounding plain is farmland. Its field boundaries and irrigation lines draw a pattern of long strips and rectangles that is almost as strong as the town itself. Mountains rise in the wider region, but the town sits on a flat floor where the lines stay long and straight.
