Sidon lies on the Mediterranean coast south of Beirut, and from above old and new sit side by side. The historic core is right on the shore, a tight tangle of lanes and covered souks, while newer streets spread inland and along the coast in wider, straighter lines. Just offshore, the Sea Castle stands on a small island joined to the land by a stone causeway.
The city is one of the oldest in the Phoenician world and was a trading port long before classical times. The Crusaders built the Sea Castle in the thirteenth century, and the old town still holds khans, mosques and a traditional soap workshop that is now a museum. Citrus and banana groves stretch across the coastal plain toward the hills around the city.
