Sinazongwe lies on the northern shore of Lake Kariba in Zambia's Southern Province, in the Gwembe Valley below the escarpment. On the map the lake dominates, a vast open surface to the south. The shoreline is broken into bays, inlets and headlands where the valley's rivers once ran down to the Zambezi.
The town itself is a modest arrangement of streets and landing areas along the water, and further inland the ground rises toward the escarpment. Fishing for kapenta, a small sardine-like fish, is an important local industry. The rigs and landing sites along the shore are part of the place's working character.
The Gwembe Valley was reshaped when the Kariba Dam was built in the late 1950s, which flooded the land and displaced Tonga communities living along the river. Coal is mined nearby at Maamba. Flooded valleys form long inlets and narrow headlands, giving the coast a complex outline that shows well in black and white.
Escarpment slopes
Inland, the ground climbs toward the edge of the Gwembe Valley. Tracks and roads follow the rising terrain and link the lakeshore with the plateau above.
