Sitges lies on the Catalan coast south-west of Barcelona, where the Garraf massif drops towards the Mediterranean. The town is built between the hills and the sea, and the shoreline defines its map. A series of beaches is separated by small headlands, and a long seafront promenade traces the curve of the coast. Inland, the hills keep the town compact and turned towards the water.
At the centre, the church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla stands on a promontory above the sea. The old town's narrow, whitewashed streets gather around it in a close, irregular pattern. To the east and west, newer districts extend along the coast in more regular blocks, and a marina lies east of the centre. The railway and coastal road run parallel to the shore.
Sitges has long attracted artists, and the painter Santiago Rusiñol turned his home, Cau Ferrat, into a museum beside the church. Today the town is also known for its international fantasy film festival and its carnival.
