Soissons lies on the Aisne river in northern France, in a green valley between wooded plateaus. From above, the historic centre forms a compact, rounded shape on the left bank, bordered by boulevards that follow the line of the old fortifications. A smaller district sits across the river, linked by bridges.
The city has one of the longest histories in France. It was an important centre under the Merovingian kings, and the story of the Vase of Soissons from the time of Clovis is still taught in French schools. The Gothic cathedral of Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais and the twin spires of the ruined abbey of Saint-Jean-des-Vignes are its main landmarks.
